Welcome to the Pure Mathematics pages at Queen Mary, University of London. The Pure Mathematics group, part of the Mathematics Research Centre (MRC) at QMUL, embraces research and postgraduate teaching in Algebra, Combinatorics, Analysis, Geometry, Topology, Logic, and Probability. This page will direct you to information about our research, seminars, publications, and how to apply for postgraduate study here. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, we entered 20 research-active staff. 60% of our research activity was judged to be either world-leading or internationally excellent, and we received an average score (on a scale 0–4) of 2.70, placing us just about in the top third of UK Pure Mathematics groups who made submissions to the assessment. You can find a description of our research areas here. More detailed descriptions of individual researchers' interests are found by navigating to "People" in the left-hand panel. NewsChiswell symposiumOn Monday, 9 November, we held an afternoon of lectures to celebrate the career and mark the retirement of Ian Chiswell. The speakers were Martin Dunwoody, Jim Howie, and Peter Kropholler. Prize for Peter KeevashPeter Keevash has been awarded the European Prize in Combinatorics for 2009. Details will appear here shortly. Prize for Ian MacdonaldEmeritus Professor Ian Macdonald has been awarded the American Mathematical Society's Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition for his book Symmetric Functions and Hall Polynomials. The citation is here. SeminarsFollow the link "Seminars and events" on the left for details of the current seminar programme. For some of the seminars, records of past meetings are available. PublicationsFollow the link "Publications" on the left for details of publications since 1992 and papers in press by members of the Pure Mathematics group. PeopleFollow the link "People" on the left for details of individual members of the group. These include research interests, links to individual web pages where available, and links to our MathSciNet profiles and entries in the Mathematical Genealogy Project. MathSciNet is only available to subscribers, but has details of
The Mathematical Genealogy project lists our mathematical ancestors and descendants. MiscellanyFollow the link "Miscellany" on the left for further information, including details of web resources maintained by members of the Pure Mathematics group, and recent awards. Postgraduate mattersWe welcome enquiries and applications from prospective postgraduates. Use the panel above to navigate to the School's Postgraduate pages. CollaborationsWe work closely with other groups in the Mathematics Research Centre: Applied Mathematics (Dynamical Systems and Statistical Physics), Cosmology Gravitation & Relativity, Probability, and Statistics. Further information is contained on their web pages; use the panel on the left to navigate to these pages. |
